One Year in Blue!

kevin-pillarsDear B&F staff members,

I’ve been here for almost a year; I can hardly believe it. The University of Michigan has welcomed Betty and me with open arms and we are most grateful and appreciative. I am also thankful for such a mild Michigan winter, my first! It has been fun to meet so many of you and I look forward to having the opportunity to meet many more of you in the future.

As many of you know, we are engaged in a campus-wide Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategic planning process and our B&F plan will contribute to the overall university’s plan, which will be announced this fall. Not only is this one of the President’s top priorities, it is also important to me personally. As I have said on several occasions: how boring would it be if everyone was just like me! I enjoy getting to know and learn from people with a variety of backgrounds, intellectual thought, upbringing, culture or religion.

We are always looking for the best and brightest, whether we are filling openings for students, faculty or staff members. The best and brightest are harder to find if we limit ourselves by ethnicity, culture, race, religion or any other parameter. I am excited about the work we are going to do together to improve diversity, equity and inclusion at this great university and bring that richness to our lives and our work that Makes Blue Go!

I have been pleased to hear about the amount of interest shown by B&F staff in contributing to the B&F Diversity, Equity and Inclusion plan. The B&F Diversity Working Group has been working with senior staff to understand and synthesize your observations and suggestions, and to develop strategic objectives and actions for B&F. I look forward to sharing the draft of the B&F plan in the spring.

Finally, I hope you each will take the opportunity to share your perceptions about Business and Finance through our biennial B&F Employee Satisfaction Survey. The B&F leadership team and I take your feedback very seriously! As of Thursday morning approximately 63 percent of our colleagues have responded to the survey. If you have not already please take a minute to complete the survey, and help me encourage others to do so as well.

Best Regards and Go Blue!
