The Business and Finance plan to enhance diversity, equity and inclusion is underway with activities scheduled to ramp up later this winter and spring.
The five-year plan officially launched last fall along with the broader U-M plan and contains activities focused on the following key areas: recruitment and retention, skill development and education, and promoting an inclusive climate. Teams responsible for implementing more than two dozen different action steps in our first year have been hard at work researching policies, digging through data and implementing activities to engage staff.
For example: Human Resources representatives joined members of the B&F Diversity Committee for a two and half hour session on Unconscious Bias; teams in Finance viewed the recent presentation by diversity expert Steve Robbins, followed by a group discussion; and in the Shared Services Center, teams have participated in a number of activities on topics such as privilege, social identity and micro-aggressions.
In addition, other widespread actions for all B&F are underway, including:
- Language to be added to every B&F job posting about our strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
- Updating the B&F hiring and selection guidelines
- Scheduling multiple training and skill development opportunities for B&F staff and supervisors (coming soon)
As we move forward as a community, the continued engagement and input from staff will be critical to our growth as a diverse and inclusive place to work.
