From Kevin’s Desk: Your work, talents and service truly make blue go! (01/20/17)

Dear Colleagues,

The part of my job as EVP-CFO that I value the most is my responsibility to ensure that staff voices are represented in all executive decision-making. Faculty and students play an obvious and central role at the University of Michigan, but so do the tens of thousands in staff positions – you Make Blue Go! For this reason, I couldn’t be prouder that B&F is a key sponsor of the MStaff200 event, which will celebrate 200 years of staff contributions at U-M as part of our bicentennial celebration.

B&F staff play a role in every aspect of the university’s mission, and so many of you go above and beyond to ensure we deliver not just good service, but excellent service to the campus every day. Take for example Josh Blackmon from the Facilities Maintenance Metal Shops. Josh routinely transforms what might otherwise be an ordinary welding product into a meaningful work of art. Check out the remarkable work Josh did for Mott Children’s Hospital or, better yet, stop by and see it in person in the Mott lobby. This difference makes U-M the very special place it is for all of us – faculty, students, healthcare workers and staff!

I want to spotlight artistry like Josh’s and other staff talents at the MStaff200 event. Whatever your talent – whether you play an instrument, make furniture, create jewelry or even volunteer to enrich the community – I hope you will sign up so we can recognize you and your talent or community contribution at the event in June. You can learn more about these opportunities on the B&F website.

Lastly, I want to thank everyone who supported or attended the MLK events this past week. Hundreds of B&F staff members attended Monday’sSymposium keynote lecture, either at Hill Auditorium, in a conference room, at their desk, or at one of our three overflow locations. I also want to thank the many supervisors who worked very hard to ensure nearly anyone who desired to attend was able to do so. It was a terrific success! Additional Symposium events will take place throughout January and February. If you were unable to participate on Monday, I hope you’ll consider attending one of these great events.

With gratitude,
