From Kevin’s Desk: We Make Blue Safe

Dear Colleagues:

Happy Friday!

One of the most wonderful aspects of working for a big university like ours is the school spirit we share being Michigan Wolverines. And nowhere is that “maize and blue” pride felt more than on football Saturday at the Big House. Betty and I enjoyed the Michigan home game experience with our friends from Texas this past weekend. Not only was it great football, but how cool that Athletics is aiming to make game days in the Stadium zero-waste events! Kudos to our Office of Sustainability for their partnership on this effort, and for helping all of us reach our sustainability goals.  They are yet another example of how Business & Finance is leading change in the world!

So much behind-the-scenes efforts go into making game days happen, including those of our B&F colleagues in Moving and Trucking who help ensure the more than 100,000 fans stay safe. Before each home game, Moving & Trucking brings in a fleet of trucks carrying barricades and other devices used to close streets and control traffic, which they set up just hours before the game. This critical work, done in partnership with the Ann Arbor Police Department and the university’s Division of Public Safety and Security, is essential to ensuring stadium security and the safety of tens of thousands of pedestrians. Read more about their efforts on the B&F website, and please join me in giving a huge shout out to the Moving and Trucking team!  You folks ROCK!

This week I had the opportunity to join a meeting that included many city officials including our own Ann Arbor School District Superintendent, Jeanice Swift. I already knew from estimates made by our economic development folks that every Michigan home football game generates $12 million in revenue for the local economy – at hotels, restaurants, rental cars, etc. But what I learned from Superintendent Swift is that fan parking at Pioneer High School generates more than $1 million in direct funding for Ann Arbor schools each year. How awesome is that!  Public education helping public education!

It’s a home football weekend again!  Even if you don’t go to the game, watch the sky because we are playing Air Force and they are bringing a few of their T-38 jets for a pre-game flyover.  Enjoy, and remember to thank those who serve, and have served, our country.

Thanks for all you do to make this university great. Go Blue!!

With much appreciation and gratitude,

Kevin
