From Kevin’s Desk: We Make Blue Go Underground! (11/30/18)

Dear Colleagues:

Happy Friday!

While many of us in B&F work behind the scenes, did you know that we have a team of professionals who literally work underground? The pipefitters, insulators and electricians who make up the university’s Tunnel Crew—they affectionately call themselves the “Tunnel Rats”—work in a subterranean network of tunnels that deliver steam, hot water, compressed air and data cables to most buildings on Central Campus. They manage a highly complex system that is absolutely vital to campus operations and do so with incredible care and attention to detail. You can read more and see some cool photos of their work on our B&F website. YOU GUYS ROCK!!!

The beautiful photo on the cover of our B&F FY19 Progress Report is an actual shot of the inside of a pipe being welded by one of our own Tunnel Rats – amazing! If you haven’t had a chance to read the report I encourage you to check it out. It highlights some of the amazing work that’s been happening across B&F to create a positive and inclusive organization.

I also want to make sure you saw the announcement a few weeks ago about exciting new DEI learning resources from our colleagues in Organizational Learning. These resources are available to the university community to help us cultivate a more inclusive, welcoming and diverse place to learn and work. Check out the lifelong learning modeltwo dozen short videos on inclusion and part two of the online learning course DEI: The Basics. I encourage you to use and discuss these materials with your teams.

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. Betty and I had a great time with our family, sharing laughs and eating WAY too much! The turkey and cornbread dressing I cooked was outstanding, if I do say so myself! Thanksgiving just begins the holiday season. Let’s make all of December a time to be thankful for all that is good in our lives and for the many challenges that can make us better.

With much appreciation and gratitude,

Kevin
