From Kevin’s Desk: We have SO much to be proud of! (01/12/18)

Dear Colleagues:

Happy Friday!

This week we released the university’s 2017 Annual Report. I am pleased to say once again, the university remains financially healthy and well positioned for the coming years. Financial stewardship is one of our core purposes in B&F and I couldn’t be prouder of the work all of you do that ensures the university will continue to have the resources it needs to fulfill its mission. I want to give a special shout-out and thanks to the teams of professionals in Finance and the Investment Office for their truly incredible work on delivering the financial results highlighted in the Annual Report – you guys ROCK!

Next week we join the entire university in commemorating and celebrating the life and work of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Our annual MLK Symposium is a very special Michigan tradition!  This year’s Memorial Keynote Lecture will feature actor and youth advocate, Hill Harper.  The keynote will be held on Monday, January 15 at 10:00 a.m. in Hill Auditorium. Enhanced bus service from WOTO and the SSC will be available for those who attend the event in person; you can also watch the event via live stream. A complete list of all campus events can be found at the U-M MLK Symposium website. I encourage you to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy by attending one or more of the events.

I am most grateful for our university’s deep commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and for the work we are all doing across B&F to create a more welcoming environment for our staff and those we serve. A terrific example is the work underway in our three U-M Children’s Centers, which provide care for more than 475 children of U-M employees and students – their families speak more than 40 different languages at home.  All 120 teachers and staff have participated in DEI-related education to ensure they provide the best possible care for the diverse families they serve. You can read more about this fantastic work on our B&F website.

Lastly, I want to thank all of you who submitted nominations for our inaugural Staff Impact Awards. We had 191 nominations in total which included more than 40 for teams. Awardees will be notified in March and a reception will be held in May.  Thank you for recognizing many of our colleagues for their outstanding work!

Thank you for all you do to make this university great.

With much appreciation and gratitude,

Kevin
