From Kevin’s Desk: Making a positive difference, together! (10/12/18)

Dear Colleagues:

Happy Friday!

I am pleased to share with you our FY18 B&F Progress Report. It highlights efforts across B&F to build a positive and inclusive organization and includes our key accomplishments. I believe deeply that creating a diverse workplace with equitable practices and where everyone feels included is essential to creating a positive work environment.  A number of DEI-specific efforts are featured in the report.  I hope you will take a few minutes to read about our progress — we have a lot of work ahead of us to achieve our goals, but I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve started.  Together we are making a positive difference!  Also, the awesome cover photo was taken by one of our super-talented student interns; very cool!

This week the university held its annual Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Summit and released the campus-wide Year-Two DEI Progress Report. B&F staff were involved in several of the many notable achievements in the report, including the construction of the new Trotter Multicultural Center, led by our colleagues in Architecture, Engineering & Construction, and the DEI training that our colleagues in Organizational Learning coordinated for more than 17,000 participants across campus. Please join me in congratulating these colleagues on their fantastic accomplishments and for being recognized in this way – YOU FOLKS ROCK!!!

And while we’re on the subject of DEI events, I want to make sure you are aware of a number of activities happening across campus throughout the month of October as part of the annual Investing in Ability program, under the theme of “Diversity Includes Disability.” Please check out the schedule online and take time to attend an event.

Lastly, we kicked off our FY19 B&F Leadership Forum this week with comments from U-M Men’s Basketball Head Coach, John Beilein. In addition to being one of the winningest coaches in U-M history, Coach Beilein is a devoted practitioner of positive leadership. Three points that stood out to me from his talk: live your life with integrity, choose to be grateful for what you have and show kindness toward all people.  My father chose the same path and his was a very rich life.  I am so very pleased about the new MHealthy campaign to promote kindness. If you haven’t already, please join me in taking the kindness pledge. Practice kindness — it’s one small thing we can all do to make the world a better place.

With much appreciation and gratitude and GO Blue!

P.S., Please post for staff who don’t have regular access to email.
