From Kevin’s Desk: Happy New Year! (1/11/19)

Dear Colleagues:

Happy Friday, and Happy 2019!

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday break and that the New Year is off to a terrific start. I had a wonderful time with my family. I also took the time to connect with longtime friends. It reminds me that the most precious thing in life is our relationship with others. I encourage you to take the time to pick up the phone, send a note or even go meet someone who was special in your life, just to let them know you are thinking of them.

Each January, our annual report provides an opportunity to look back and reflect. By any measure, 2018 was a terrific year! Of the many notable items, I would highlight the following:

  • The university invested a record $1.55 billion in research, with a significant portion from federal research funding.
  • The value of the endowment reached $11.9 billion.
  • We increased our budget for undergraduate financial aid by 9.5 percent on the Ann Arbor campus, 9.4 percent on the Dearborn campus, and 12.7 percent on the Flint campus.

If you haven’t had a chance to look through the report, check it out! The incredible achievements of the last year were made possible in large part by your dedicated work to Make Blue Go; these are your accomplishments! THANK YOU! Our colleagues in Finance, the Shared Services Center and the Investment Office deserve a special shout-out for their spectacular stewardship of the university’s financial resources – YOU FOLKS ROCK!!!

Speaking of exemplary service to the university, if you know an individual, or a team, who goes over and above to help the university fulfill its mission, I encourage you to consider nominating them for a Staff Impact Award. The January 16th deadline is fast approaching, but there’s still time! Just click this link to learn more and make a nomination. There is no better way to say “great job” than by nominating someone for an award. A few minutes completing a nomination is an investment in a colleague.

Last but not least, just a quick reminder that on January 23rd the university will turn on two-factor authentication (DUO) for Web login for all Ann Arbor campus employees. If you haven’t set it up yet, please take a few minutes to do so. Using Duo helps secure the university’s data and your own personal information. You can learn more on the ITS website. There are several ways to use DUO — check it out, I think you will like it.

Thanks for all you do to make this university great – here’s to a happy and healthy year!

With much appreciation and gratitude,

P.S., Please post for staff who don’t have regular access to email.
