From Kevin’s Desk: Hail! Hail! To Michigan! (04/06/18)

Dear Colleagues:

Happy Friday!

Wow – what a week it was for basketball! It was a thrill to see our team compete in the national championship game and to play with so much heart throughout their fantastic season, which included a Big Ten championship!  Karyn Heissenbuttel, a student intern in our office, was recently featured in the Michigan Daily as a member of the U-M dance team, and she traveled with the team to San Antonio. She said the stadium was filled with maize and blue, and there was nothing but love and support for our Wolverines.  Regardless of the game’s outcome, they are forever victors – Hail to the Victors!

One of the things that I admire most about head coach John Beilein is his commitment to “coach the whole player.” You can tell how much he cares about each of his athletes, which he demonstrates not only by developing their skills on the court, but also by supporting them personally and prioritizing their overall health and well-being. He encourages players to meditate and focus on the important things in life over performance.  Coach Beilein considers his principle role to be mentor and teacher. It’s no wonder he was named Coach of the Year by CBS Sports. Coach Beilein – you ROCK!!!!

The wellbeing of ourselves and those around us at work and at home should be a top priority. We are so fortunate to have many opportunities available at the university to attend to our health. One way is to participate in one of the MHealthy programs.  If you haven’t registered for MHealthy Rewards, I encourage you to do so before the April 20 deadline to qualify for up to $220 in incentives, including a fitness center reimbursement up to $120 and an additional $100 for completing healthy activities. It only takes a few minutes to register, so what are you waiting for?

I believe all of us can take a page out of coach Beilein’s playbook by supporting and encouraging each other and focusing on what really matters most. And by spending time mentoring and coaching a colleague or student. You might be surprised at how much we all have in common and how much others will appreciate your support. By investing in relationships, like coach Beilein, we will not only create a winning culture, but we’ll also create teams that feel like a family.

Hail to the Victors and Go Blue!

With much appreciation and gratitude,

Kevin
