From Kevin’s Desk: Got data? (9/14/18)

Dear Colleagues:

Happy Friday!

The University of Michigan recently welcomed Dr. Ravi Pendse as our new vice president for information technology and chief information officer. Ravi comes to us from Rhode Island, where he served in a similar role at Brown University. While technology services are no longer officially part of B&F, many of you continue to work closely with our colleagues in ITS. Having met Ravi several times, I believe he will be an excellent CIO for the university and a terrific leader for this critical area. Please join me in welcoming Ravi and his family to Ann Arbor and to the University of Michigan community.

One area of technology services that has become increasingly important is the visualization of university data to support smarter decision-making, track progress toward key goals, create interactive reports, and more. One of the many services our colleagues in Information Quest (a joint department of B&F and ITS) provides is to help business administrators and others across campus build Tableau dashboards using their own data. And recently, the IQ team co-hosted the first U-M Tableau Symposium for more than 250 attendees from across the university. You can read more about this great event and the data visualization services provided by the IQ team on our website.

Did you see the Record article about our colleague, Matt Thompson, yesterday? Matt is a fire alarm technician in F&O and, as a hobby, he makes Adirondack chairs in the shape of the state of Michigan that dispense beer and wine! And if that wasn’t awesome enough, he raffles the chairs to raise money for his favorite charity. Matt, YOU ROCK!

I’m so proud to work with such amazing colleagues who make this university—and our world—great.

With much appreciation and gratitude,

P.S., Please post for staff who don’t have regular access to email.
