From Kevin’s Desk: Employee Survey Actions (3/6/2020)

Dear Colleagues:

Happy Friday!

Thanks again to all of you for participating in the B&F Employee Engagement Survey last year and for providing invaluable feedback about our workplace culture.  I am thankful for your feedback and take it very seriously.  As a result of what you have told us (see the B&F All-Staff Survey Report), the leadership team has initiated a number of important actions. I want to share just a few highlights of these efforts thus far:

The number one finding from last year’s survey results was the desire for career and professional development. As a result, we have initiated a number of focused efforts, including:

  • Raising awareness about existing development resources that are available, free of charge, to all university employees.
  • Ensuring managers have the skills and resources necessary to support staff development, including a related training and toolkit that will be piloted this spring.
  • Supporting dozens of departmental actions, such as efforts to clarify career paths and opportunities, adjust role classifications, and enhance or establish career development processes and resources.

The survey also indicated that there is significant interest in flexible work arrangements. In response, we have created a B&F-wide philosophy and established guidelines for flexible work arrangements, which have been, and will continue to be, implemented based on the unique needs of various job functions. Please check with your manager to learn what is available in your department and let us know how we can continue to refine and improve them.

In addition to these centralized initiatives, there are also dozens of other actions underway to respond to departmental feedback. These include efforts to strengthen communications, clarify goals, increase recognition, utilize staff input in decision making, bolster collaboration and teamwork, improve the physical work environment, and many, many others. You will be hearing about the specific initiatives happening in your area in the next couple of weeks, if you haven’t already.

Your feedback is a gift and I do not take it for granted.  We will continue to work on these and other efforts over the coming months, and while progress won’t happen overnight, I want to assure you that we are committed to creating a better work experience for everyone. This year’s employee engagement survey is coming soon – it will run from April 16 through May 1.  I hope you will again participate and help us Make Blue Better for you. I am personally very grateful for your input.

With much appreciation and gratitude,
