From Kevin’s Desk: Constructing our Beautiful Campus (6/15/18)

Dear Colleagues:

Happy Friday!

One thing I am sure you have noticed is that there is A LOT of construction going on around campus! From the renovations happening at LSA and the Michigan Union to the new Trotter Multicultural Center and many more, our colleagues in F&O’s Architecture, Engineering and Construction manage an incredible number of projects to maintain our beautiful and state-of-the-art facilities—all while taking great care to minimize the stress and impact caused by major projects. If you’ve had the pleasure of walking through some of our new or newly renovated spaces on campus, you know that the end results are truly spectacular!

One critical project underway now is the construction of a new underground stormwater infiltration system on Central Campus under the lawn area between South State Street and Angell, Tisch and Alumni Memorial halls. The project will mitigate flooding in some campus buildings, and it also supports U-M’s sustainability goal to protect the Huron River by minimizing runoff.  Once completed, the system will be able to handle approximately 750,000 gallons of water at a time – that is the equivalent of 1.75 feet of water covering a football field. Wow!

Please join me in thanking AEC for all they do to provide our campus community with an exceptional learning and working environment – you guys ROCK!

I hope you’ll take some time to get outside and stroll around our beautiful campus. Now’s the time to enjoy the weather before it gets too hot and muggy!

With much appreciation and gratitude,
