Last Saturday was a very chilly Spring Commencement for our graduating students and their families. Former Wolverine, NFL Player and philanthropist Charles Woodson gave an inspiring commencement address encouraging students to focus on each other’s humanity and let go of perceived differences. It was a powerful message and one that is relevant for us as we work to build a positive and inclusive organization in B&F. Commencement always makes me so proud of the ways that each of you Make Blue Go for our students and support their Michigan experience. Our alumni go on to change the world, and they couldn’t do it without you! You Folks ROCK!!!
Speaking of supporting students, the Shared Services Center (SSC) is currently hosting four graduate students from China who are part of an executive education program at the Ross School of Business. The students are engaged in an action-learning project, using their own expertise to help SSC leaders explore opportunities to build capacity and increase efficiency. In return, the students are getting to learn about the shared service business model – experience they can take back to their work in China. You can learn more about the SSC student project (and find out how you can engage a student team in your department) on the B&F website. I encourage you to engage our students by tapping into their expertise. Not only will you find out just how smart they are, I think you will discover something great about yourself!
Finally, I want to let you know that we are establishing the university’s first staff ombuds, which will report directly to me. This new position will serve as a neutral third party resource for all staff members across the university expanse, providing information and support to help staff resolve concerns or conflicts. The role will initially support staff on the Ann Arbor campus and at Michigan Medicine, but may expand to Flint and Dearborn in future years. The university already has ombuds for the faculty and for students. I am so pleased that now all staff will have one too!
Enjoy the warmer weather and don’t forget to make time to take care of yourself and your loved one!
Thanks for all you do to support this university, our students and each other – again, You Folks ROCK!!!
With much appreciation and gratitude,
