It’s great to see the maize and blue spirit on campus as our men’s basketball team gets ready to take on Loyola tomorrow in the Final Four of the NCAA tournament! And I hear that our men’s hockey team has also won a berth in the Frozen Four. How incredible is it to achieve that level of success? GO BLUE!
One takeaway from March Madness is that the best teams tailor their strategies for every game and every opponent. I’ll leave basketball to John Beilein, but it’s a good reminder that we often need tailored approaches to achieve our goals, too – like building a positive, inclusive culture for everyone in B&F. Our MHealthy colleagues put this principle into action with a training program called “Leaders Creating a Culture at Its Best.” This program helps mid-level leaders address their particular challenges related to supporting health and well-being among their teams. In just two years since the program began, more than 600 managers and supervisors from across the university have participated. Wow! Every one of us plays a role in creating the culture here at U-M. I was reminded of this at yesterday’s Regents meeting, where the Board voted to begin the process of renaming two buildings on campus: the C.C. Little Science Building and Alexander Winchell House. This decision, which you can learn more about here, comes in response to advocacy from students and faculty. I am very proud of how our campus community has created a thoughtful and responsive process to review this kind of request. Thank you for being a part of this engaged community!
I’m cautiously optimistic that spring may finally have arrived this week. But it’s hard to believe there’s only about a month left until graduation! While not all of you regularly interact with students, your work is essential to creating an environment where they can thrive. From maintaining beautiful grounds to processing payroll on time, you make Blue go every day so students can focus on what matters – like final exams. Thanks for all you do to support their success!
