From Kevin’s Desk: Big news for little victors (and their parents)! (9/7/18)

Dear Colleagues:

Happy Friday!

I hope you saw the fantastic announcement in the University Record that as of September 1, the university now offers paid maternity and parental leave! The policy provides up to 12 weeks of paid time off to birth mothers and up to 6 weeks of paid time off to fathers and other non-birth parents after a child’s birth or placement for adoption, foster care or legal guardianship. Gosh, I wish these benefits were in place when I had my family!  I’m so proud that U-M has taken this important step to support our faculty and staff.  Please join me in thanking our B&F colleagues from UHR, Payroll and the SSC who, working with other university colleagues, championed the recommendation, won approval and are now implementing this new benefit as I write – YOU FOLKS ROCK!

I am also pleased to tell you that Lorraine Currie will join B&F as our inaugural director of Enterprise Strategic Risk Management.  As the university’s first leader in this emerging discipline, Lorraine will work with colleagues from across the university’s wide expanse and the Board of Regents to help identify and assess strategic risks and help them put processes and practices in place to manage them. Many of you know Lorraine from her many years at U-M as a senior audit manager in the Office of University Audits. I am thrilled that she has agreed to serve the university in this very important role.  Lorraine will report directly to me and will be a member of our B&F senior leadership team.  Please help me welcome Lorraine to our B&F family!

I hope the beginning of the new school year is off to a great start for all of you, particularly for those of you with young children – I certainly remember those days!  I was in Austin last week to celebrate my mother’s 87th birthday and she reminded me that, when I got home from my first day of first grade, I told her it was fun but I didn’t need to go back anymore!  Apparently, mom enjoyed me being AWAY at school more than I enjoyed being IN school!  Anyway, being a working mom or dad can be stressful, especially during these times of transition.  I am so proud of the work we do to make this university a great place to work for parents.  Thank you!!

With much appreciation and gratitude,

P.S., Please post for staff who do not have regular access to email.
