From Kevin’s Desk: An investment in your health pays off (05/19/17)

Happy Friday!

I am thrilled that the university recently received the 2017 Governor’s Fitness Award for being one of the state’s healthiest workplaces. U-M was recognized for our commitment to creating a healthy workplace and the innovative programs offered by our B&F colleagues in MHealthy. Please join me in congratulating the MHealthy team on this well-deserved award and thanking them for all they do to make this a great place to work!

Taking steps to improve your health is one of the best investments you can make, professionally and personally. The university also takes this investment seriously, as evidenced by the broad array of programs MHealthy offers to help us all move more, stress less and increase our well-being. This summer I’m planning to try MHealthy’s new Colorful Choices program. It looks easy – the goal is to eat more fruits and vegetables, in a variety of colors, and track your points on your phone or computer. (And eligible staff can earn $50 through MHealthy Rewards for participating!) I hope you will consider taking advantage of any one or more of the MHealthy programs.

Did you know that one of the best, and easiest, things you can do to improve your health and your personal productivity is to take periodic breaks throughout the day. Just like rebooting a phone or computer can get it working again, humans need to reboot, too. Get outside or walk a lap around the office, take a minute to breathe deeply, touch your toes or get a drink of water. I’ve told you before my theory that brakes make cars go faster – well, “breaks” make you go faster, too!

Finally, please do take some time this summer to relax with your loved ones. While a trip to a far off place can be fun, you don’t have to go far to relax. Last year for the first time in my career I didn’t do any email for two weeks. It nearly killed me for the first few days not to even take a peek. But by the third day I totally forgot about it and it was the most relaxing break I have ever had. Take a real break this summer, you’ll find it to be the best thing you can do for you and for your loved ones!
