From Kevin’s Desk: A positively great place to work! (10/27/17)

Dear Colleagues:

Happy Friday!

It’s that time of year again! We’re in the middle of the annual Open Enrollment period for benefits. This is your once-a-year opportunity to change your health, dental, vision or legal plan enrollment, or to open a flexible spending account for 2018 — so be sure to make any changes by 5:00 p.m. next Friday, November 3! Also, if you haven’t done it already, I strongly encourage you to meet with one of the financial planners at TIAA or Fidelity who are available to you at no cost as part of your retirement benefit.

I’ve heard time and again how much our university benefits matter to our faculty and staff. I want to take this opportunity to recognize the hard work of our colleagues in the Benefits Office, HR Records & Information Services and the Shared Services Center. Together, these dedicated colleagues make our outstanding benefits “go” for all of us – from plan design and contracting to educating our community, processing enrollments and managing complex data. Please join me in thanking them for their fantastic work!

I also want to congratulate the MHealthy team for their terrific bicentennial symposium on health and wellness. The event this week featured a keynote by Martin Seligman, bestselling author of the books Learned Optimism, Authentic Happiness and Flourish. Dr. Seligman is a pioneer in the field of positive psychology, which focuses on the factors and behaviors that lead to happiness. This approach has been applied to many fields of study, including the building of positive organizations (happening here at our own Ross Center for Positive Organizations). If you didn’t attend the symposium, I want to encourage you to watch the recording of his presentation. You can learn more from his website authentichappiness.org. We are so fortunate to have a group like MHealthy that is focused on improving the health and wellbeing of every university employee!

Lastly, I hope you will attend the final bicentennial festivities happening throughout today and this evening, especially the dedication of the public art sculpture to honor staff, the A-maize-ing concert of student virtuosos and the HAILstorm! light and sound show (8:00pm9:00pm and 9:45pm).  Bring your family!  I hope to see you there!

With much appreciation and gratitude,

Kevin
