One of the many reasons I am proud to work at the University of Michigan is its deep commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. In B&F, DE&I is foundational to our work to create a positive organization – we cannot truly create a positive work environment that isn’t also diverse, equitable and inclusive. As part of my own commitment to these values, I take advantage of the numerous opportunities on our campus to learn about DEI topics, such as the many activities happening in honor of Black History Month. I encourage you to participate too! For example:
- All B&F staff are invited to attend Finance’s “Honoring Black History Month” event on Tuesday, February 25, which will feature interactive, self-guided exhibits on notable historic black figures and will include light refreshments. Stop by anytime between 10 am – 3:00 pm, in Suite G18 of Wolverine Tower. It should be a fun and informative event!
- Our colleagues in UHR’s Organizational Learning have shared the Heritage Series videos themed around Black History Month. These videos are short, quick ways that you can learn about the contributions of many black Americans – watch them on your own, or even better, invite a few colleagues to watch them with you over lunch!
You can learn more about the university-wide efforts to support diversity, equity and inclusion on the diversity.umich.edu website.
I continue to hear wonderful stories about the activities our positive energizers are organizing – their ideas are so creative! For example, to reduce negative comments and conversations on her team, one positive energizer in Custodial and Grounds Services created a “Let’s Be Positive” board to promote more positive habits. The board not only encourages staff to recognize and support each other, but also includes a “Vacuum up the Negativity” section to raise awareness about the impact of negative comments in the workplace. Their motto: “A better way makes for a better day.” How cool! You can read more about positive energizer activities on our website. Positive energizers…Keep up the great work! YOU ROCK!!!
With much appreciation and gratitude,
