As part of the Ann Arbor Commuter Challenge (co-sponsored by Logistics, Transportation and Parking), this morning I had the opportunity to show support to many of our U-M colleagues who use alternative transportation to get to, from and around campus. Did you know that more than 600 U-M employees participate in vanpools? Here are some more amazing stats: 7.2 million people travel the 12 university bus routes annually (for free!), and there are 66 bike lockers around campus in addition to 8,500 bike parking spaces! Thanks to all of you who utilize these options, which support our environmental sustainability efforts. You can learn more about the alternative transportation program on our website.
Something else that’s good for both you and the planet is eating more fruits and vegetables–but if you’re like me, you probably don’t always succeed in this area. To help us out, our colleagues at MHealthy are once again offering the eight-week Colorful Choices program, which is open for registration now to benefits-eligible faculty and staff. You can also visit one of our M Farmers Markets (on or near campus) to buy affordable fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers–so cool!
From getting around to getting healthy, I’m amazed every day by the countless ways you support this university. I’m also proud that U-M is recognizing the contributions of staff in a new way. Earlier this week I was thrilled to help celebrate the recipients of the inaugural University of Michigan Staff Impact Awards, which recognize individuals for their commitments to volunteerism, service, collaboration and workplace improvement. Special kudos to the Voices of the Staff team and our colleagues in University Human Resources for making it happen–you guys ROCK!
Thanks for all you do to make this university great, and for all you do to support the health and happiness of your colleagues.
With much appreciation and gratitude,
