From Kevin’s Desk: Adapting to Our Situation (5/1/2020)

Dear Colleagues:

Happy Friday!

Due to the unprecedented changes the COVID-19 pandemic has caused to our normal operations, we have decided to cancel the B&F employee engagement survey this year. I want to assure you that our entire executive team remains absolutely committed to the survey process. All areas of B&F will continue to take actions that respond to FY19 survey feedback and we will continue to keep you updated about progress. We fully expect the survey to resume next year when we can ensure that all staff will have an opportunity to participate.  Your feedback is essential to our efforts to create a more positive and inclusive work environment for all employees.

Our B&F teams continue to adapt to the needs of the COVID-19 situation with incredible ingenuity and teamwork. In a truly terrific example, our colleagues in F&O Logistics, Transportation & Parking (LTP), collaborated with their colleagues in F&O Architecture, Engineering & Construction; Environment, Health & Safety; and Maintenance – Auxiliaries & Central Shops to design, create and install clear plastic shields for LTP’s buses that would reduce the spread of respiratory droplets between bus operators and passengers (similar to the shields now in place at grocery store cashier stations). This wonderful collaboration resulted in installations of partitions on all 47 U-M buses currently operating in less than two weeks — how awesome!! You can read more about this effort on the B&F website. To everyone involved in this project: YOU ROCK!!!

In addition to all you are doing to prevent the spread of COVID-19, please also be sure to take care of your own mental and emotional well-being. May is national mental health month, which makes it a great time to check out the UHR website for a wide variety of resources, if you haven’t already, and encourage others to do the same. These are trying times, but, as the Beatles famously said, “we’ll get by with a little help from our friends.”

Personally, I have found at least one way to amuse myself…grow a beard (see picture)! I have never had one in my life. Will it stay post COVID-19???  I hope that you will find some fun in your life, too.

With much appreciation and gratitude,

Kevin
